The user base of OpenAI’s best-known chatbot has been growing rapidly since last year. While in December the company reported 300 million weekly active users, the figure has now reached 400 million, meaning that 5 percent of the world’s population uses the platform.
Even as more and more AI assistants enter the market, such as China’s DeepSeek or the newly announced Grok 3, ChatGPT’s popularity keeps growing. Since last August they have managed to double the number of weekly active users, which according to the latest data has now reached 400 million.
The number of subscribers has not yet been disclosed, but the GPT-5 model, which promises even better performance than its predecessor, will soon be available in the free version as well. Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI’s executives, shared on X that two million business users currently use ChatGPT for work tasks, while API usage of the reasoning model has grown fivefold since the launch of o3 mini.

ChatGPT keeps breaking records and growing at an astonishing pace. OpenAI’s chatbot spread exceptionally fast right after its launch, often overtaking unexpected players in the tech industry. This growth is particularly remarkable given that only 300 million users were reported in December, according to data shared with CNBC. Although OpenAI does not publish exact subscriber figures, it is certain that two million enterprise customers already pay for its services, double the figure from September 2024.
Usage of OpenAI’s APIs is also showing significant growth: according to the company, traffic has doubled over the past six months. These APIs make it possible for AI solutions based on OpenAI’s language models to work inside a wide range of software.
