After OpenAI, Perplexity is also unveiling its own web browser, Comet, although many questions about the new product remain open.
AI and browsers: the next big step?
Browser development is increasingly coming into focus for artificial intelligence companies. OpenAI has already signalled that it is working on its own browser, while Google is in a fortunate position: it owns the world’s most popular browser, Chrome, into which it has already integrated AI-powered features.
Now Perplexity, the developer of the innovative AI search engine, has also announced that it is preparing its own browser, which will be called Comet. The post published on X revealed few concrete details so far, so the exact release date and the final form of the browser are still unknown. What is certain, however, is that it will arrive with deeply integrated AI features.
A new player in a crowded market
According to TechCrunch, with Comet Perplexity is entering an extremely saturated market, where numerous alternative browsers compete for users alongside Google Chrome. The situation is further complicated by the fact that many of them are built on the Chromium engine developed by Google, so Perplexity will need to offer something truly unique to succeed.
Perplexity can hope that its current search users will quickly adopt the new browser, allowing it to win a significant share of the browser market. Ultimately, however, its success will depend largely on which features Comet offers and how competitive it is against the market leaders. A well-executed, AI-powered browser could bring significant changes to the industry.
